WHAT'S GOING ON

  • Nat Young off the top

After a long four month break from competition, the Gold Coast surfers were amped and ready to get the contest juices flowing again.  Event #6 saw the largest turnout of competitors in Gold Coast comp this season with over 250 surfers swarming the shores of C Street at the spot the locals call “Pipe”.  Many new kids clocked in for contest duty including former World Champion Tom Curren’s sons Frank and Pat, who donned the NSSA jersey for the first time.  Good chest to head high rights were running down the point with the usual suspects tearing it up.  Nat Young, Spencer Regan, the Coffin bros, Sage Erickson, Catherine Clark, Bo Stanley, Alex Hauck, Dan Fowler and “Slamz” delivered winning performances.  Gold Coast event #7 was held on Sunday however the contest came to a screeching halt when howling gale force winds with over 40 mph gusts in the afternoon wrecked havoc on contest operations.  A few remaining preliminary rounds plus all the finals were postponed to March 10-11 at the scheduled Gold Coast #8 & #9 events at C Street
