Newport Beach, CA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VIRS AND YOUNG HIGHLIGHT BIG WEEKEND FOR FREESTYLE SURF TEAM; HARRINGTON LEADS WAKE TEAM CHARGE
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., (Oct. 15, 2007) − Freestyle athletes are making their presence felt throughout the action sports community this month as the surf and wake teams continue to build their resumes by claiming some of the most prestigious awards and accolades in their respective sports.
Highlighting the surf team achievements, this past weekend Adam Virs won the Macy’s Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep, where he collected the most cumulative points from three different contests;the Jeep-Body Glove Surfbout, the Newport Pro presented by Jeep and the O’Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep. For his efforts, Virs was presented a new Jeep Patriot and $10,000 to keep the tank filled. “I’m so stoked Macy’s stepped up and created the Trifecta, after winning that I wasn’t even bummed when I lost in the semis of the Coldwater, I was already over the moon!” Virs told Freestyle on Monday.
Keeping the hot streak going for the surf team, Nat Young won the Grade 3 Oakley Pro Junior in Santa Cruz despite being the youngest surfer in the finals at just 16 years-old. Young ran into some familiar faces from the Freestyle team in the finals where he squeaked a victory past teammates Nick Rosza and Travis Beckmann. Young, a Santa Cruz local, didn’t stop with the juniors, as he continued his assault on the big name surfers in the O’Neill Coldwater Classic advancing all the way to the quarter-finals. On winning in front of his hometown, Nat said, “It was sick, every time I’d catch a wave I’d hear cheers, so it pumped me up. It felt really good to bring home the victory”
Never one to shy away from a heavy wave or a magazine cover, Shane Dorian continues to make his presence known, this time on the cover of the current of Transworld Surf.
Collin Harrington is leading the charge for the Freestyle Wake Team and giving the photo-friendly Dorian a run for his money as he snagged the current cover Alliance Wakeboard magazine as well as the Freestyle ad. Harrington’s Freestyle teammates also have earned bragging rights as Keith Lidberg won the Rail Master Award and Aaron Reed was honored with the Best Video Performance Award at the recent 2007 Wake Awards in Orlando, Fla.
“We pride ourselves on the strength and performance of the athletes on the various Freestyle teams,” said Chad Labass, Freestyle marketing director. “We’re stoked to see our team riders excelling to the top of their game and bringing home some high profile awards and achievements.”
